Self Reliance
One of the most important essays by poet, philosopher, and transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self Reliance posits the idea that it is up to the individual to discover and channel their own inner Genius. This piece has many applications in the classroom; besides being an excellent resource for study of rhetoric, and asking students directly to try and understand their own passions and beliefs, the piece may also uniquely serve the teacher who needs to instill a sense of personal responsibility in students who aren’t doing their homework.
