Natural disasters can be very dangerous, and are often thought to be completely unpredictable. But perhaps they are not as unpredictable as we may think. Students will learn that by recognizing and analyzing weather patterns and trends, we can predict where and how a natural disaster may form. This story could start a discussion about the negative impact of extreme natural events on living things. New York City is the focal point of this piece, but its approach can be applied to any area of the country. Using the five natural disasters listed, discuss which may be a threat in your hometown and how to stay safe.
